Attorney general Jeff Sessions has been facing massive backlash from the American people for information that has currently leaked that he had two meetings with Russian ambassador Kislyak.
This added to the belief that Russia somehow intervened in the 2016 election cycle that resulted in the win for Donald Trump and the loss for Hillary Clinton. Many Americans believe that Russia was in communication with Donald Trump and that the Kremlin was involved in helping influence the election in Donald Trump’s favor.
The significance of the information being revealed about Jeff Sessions is that he had stated that he had no idea about if there were any Trump and Russia communications during the election cycle, meaning that he was lying under oath. Jeff Sessions himself voted to impeach Bill Clinton on charges of perjury, which many believe is the same act that he had committed.
The massive backlash from the American people has led to recusing of Jeff Sessions from any future Donald Trump and Russia communication investigations into the Donald Trump 2016 campaign. Jeff Sessions has decided that because of the pressure from the people, it would be best for him to stay out of the investigations the Justice Department conducts into the Russian hacking allegations.
Jeff Sessions stated to reporters: “I have decided to recuse myself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for President of the United States.”
The House minority leader Nancy Pelosi explained her disdain for the actions committed by Jeff Sessions: “The top cop in our country lied under oath to the people is grounds for him to resign.” She continued: “He has proved that he is unqualified and unfit to serve in that position of trust.”
Some Americans believe that the Russia issue is a non-issue and a partisan push, while others believe that it is undermining the democratic process in the United States.
